SAN
FRANCISCO, CA?nbsp; October 13, 2000: On Thursday, November
9, 2000 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM, the Asian Art Museum hosts another
evening of cocktails, music and art at Art After Hours: A Night
in Shanghai. Inviting guests to explore one of the most frenzied
eras in Chinese history, the Asian Art Museum takes them back in
time to 19th century Shanghai. Between sampling Chinese
delicacies and mingling while the sultry sounds of jazz fill the
air, party-goers will have an opportunity to view the museum's special
exhibition, Between the Thunder and the Rain: Chinese Paintings
from the Opium War through the Cultural Revolution, 1840-1979. With
newfound inspiration from these compelling works of art, visitors
can then try their hand at Chinese brush painting and create a masterpiece
of their own. To further delve into the culture and history of the
time period, guests can also pose for a picture with a likeness
of Chairman Mao and catch the classic film Shanghai Express.
Between
the Thunder and the Rain is one of the first exhibitions
to explore the array of artistic achievements created during an
exceptionally tumultuous period in modern Chinese history. Drawn
from a highly-regarded Bay Area collection, the 122 paintings 3/4
including hanging scrolls, handscrolls, horizontal scrolls, fans,
and albums 3/4 reveal a rich mix of works offering a complete survey
of the issues, styles and personalities of that era. Presenting
an examination of the major artists of the periods, the exhibition
showcases works that reflect both bold stylistic experiments and
archaistic techniques, yet all are shaped and informed by the tremendous
political, cultural, and philosophical transformations that China
underwent from the middle of the nineteenth century to the third
quarter of the twentieth century.
So
put down your mouse. Step away from your keyboard. You don't
have to wait for the weekend to have a memorable night. If
you can't make this party, don't worry - Art After Hours
returns on April 19, 2001 with The Way, held in conjunction
with the Asian Art Museum's major exhibition, Taoism and the
Arts of China. If you're lucky, you might discover the secret
to enlightenment. If not, you can still have your fortune told,
sample longevity potions, and learn tai chi.
Art
After Hours, definitely not your mother's Asian.
